RAISING BOYS UP

Below is some information on what this talk is about and the topics covered

RAISING BOYS UP

This talk is specifically for boys and is designed to offer up a confidence boosting alternative to the current approach and teachings. Following the talk there is the opportunity for break away workshops, where we deep dive into the themes covered.

This talk covers three main themes:
(For Primary and Prep Schools these themes are delivered with a story based narrative approach)

1

Challenging Negative Stereotypes

In this section we debunk the negative stereotypes and beliefs that surround masculinity, reflecting on where they come from and what we can do to combat them. We discuss how labels impact men both as individuals and as a collective, and the responsibility we all share in challenging them. This discourse gives boys a much needed chance to share their concerns, air their frustrations, and acknowledge their feelings, helping to dispel the shame and stigma that surround men and masculinity.

2

Establishing Healthy Belief Systems

This section looks at the vast array of positive and meaningful ways men impact their families, their communities and the wider world. Focusing on individual stories of bravery, compassion and resilience, as well as collective examples of creative, sporting and academic achievement, we give boys the chance to soak up all the fantastic things that are possible. Instilling an attitude of authentic self belief, built upon a deeper connection to who they are and what they are capable of.

3

Online Safety & Healthy Relationships

This final section is all about exploring the many pitfalls and risks while online, as well as a deep in depth reflection on what it takes to make and maintain a healthy relationship. The aim is not to demonise being online, but to shine a light on the damaging narratives being fed to young men by male influencers and online forums. Then linking how these warped views of what a man is, or a woman should be, impact their ability to form healthy and respectful relationships. Finishing on the importance of viewing all people as individuals first and foremost, to be judged on their own merit.  â€‹

It was a fantastic assembly. Nathan's dynamism, warmth, delivery and openness were so well received. The students were hanging on his every word and the messages he had to share were absolutely bang on. It was fabulous for our students to hear all this from someone they could really look up to and relate to in a way that they can't always with us. It's so vital for our students to see somone who is modelling emotional literacy - It's fair to say that's something we often feel we need to work on with our Y8's and Y9's. The adults got a lot out of it too.
